For all of its beauty, charm, and outdoor pursuits, Texas Hill Country is gaining a reputation for another endeavor—crafting the perfect bottle of wine.
The area in and around Austin and San Antonio is quickly establishing itself as Texas Wine Country, home to over 50 different wineries and vineyards, and few places typify the essence of Texas winemaking better than Boerne.
Forty-five minutes northwest of San Antonio, the gateway to Hill Country is also at the front step of 25 of the finest winemaking establishments in the state.
These are three of the best.
Bending Branch Winery
The wines from Bending Branch Winery, located 20 minutes northwest of Boerne in Comfort, Texas, merge together traditional and modern winemaking techniques, crafting "Next World Wines." Wine lovers have taken notice; in just over a decade of operation, wines from Bending Branch have amassed an impressive list of accolades and awards. Locally, it has been touted by the readers of the San Antonio Express-News as the Best Texas Winery from 2015 to 2019.
Visiting the winery only enhances the enjoyment of Bending Branch wines. While there is a classic tour, the Next World Wine Experience is a must for those with a deep appreciation for winemaking. However, if you're interested in just tasting, Bending Branch excels there too. USA Today recognized the establishment's tasting room as one of the best in the country for 2018.
Sister Creek Vineyards
For over 30 years, the Sister Creek Vineyard in Sisterdale, Texas has been crafting Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot in an old converted 1885 cotton gin. With a process that includes Bordeaux and Burgundy techniques, the winery is also known for its Italian-influenced Muscat Canelli. Both the Canelli 2017 and Canilli Reserves 2017 received awards at the Los Angeles International Wine Competition.
The store, tasting room, and tours represent the best of Texas Hill Country wine. Although weekends and holidays are popular, anytime is a good time to sample the Sister Creek’s offerings, since the winery only closes four days each year.
Saint Tryphon Farm and Vineyard

Opened to the public in 2018 with the release of its 2016 vintages, the small, family-operated winery represents everything great about Bourne—unique, eccentric, and possessing a genuine independent Texas spirit.
Focused on sustainably crafting vintages by using grapes grown in the Texas Hill Country, the intimate vineyard also features an 1890s-era homestead and organic farm. Visitors are welcome to take part in daily tastings.
