Boerne, Texas, is a golf lover's paradise. Twenty-one different courses, ranging from full-service resorts to municipal courses, can be found within a 20mile radius. The Hill Country climate makes golf a year-round sport, and the big-hearted hospitality of Texas may lure you into more than just a weekend getaway. With so many options, the biggest challenge will be deciding where to play first. Undoubtedly, it is tee time for you and your spouse, or perhaps a few golfing buddies, in the San Antonio area!

And, should you fall in love with the area, as so many have done before, drive through Cordillera Ranch and see what real estate it offers or investigate a couple of homes for sale in Fair Oaks Ranch.

Outstanding public courses

San Antonio loves golfers, so much so that in 2008 a nonprofit organization, the Alamo City Golf Trail, was established to improve golfers’ experiences and make golf accessible to everyone. Visitors to the area can purchase a Level 1 pass, allowing them to play six rounds.  Two different memberships for locals, Level 2 and 3, will enable passholders to golf as much as they would like for one year with no blackout dates on any of the six included municipal courses.

Cedar Creek

Cedar Creek is a favorite among the public courses and has the distinction of hosting the San Antonio Open and a US Open qualifier tournament. The course’s holes wind through hill country, taking advantage of scenic vistas and the area’s natural beauty. Golfers truly test their skills on changing elevations and narrow fairways. More often than not, they come away with higher scores than they are used to.

Buckhorn Golf Course

Buckhorn strives to perfect the art of southern hospitality and seeks to instill a love of the game in golfers of all ages. This course is one of the most scenic courses in the Texas Hill Country and is eager to accommodate corporate functions and charity tournaments. They even offer free golf for children when accompanied by a paying adult.

Canyon Springs Golf Club

Canyon Springs drew immediate national attention upon opening in 1998, as it was voted “America’s Best New Public Golf Course” by Golf Digest. Along with picturesque views and local wildlife, golfers are reminded of the history of Canyon Springs by historic buildings and remnants of former homesteads that dot the course.

Historical, classical, traditional. This course has welcomed golfers for over 100 years. During the 1940s and 1950s, it hosted the Valero Open. After extensive restoration in 2008, Brackenridge befittingly became the home of the Texas Golf Hall of Fame and an outstanding city park golf experience.

Country clubs and private courses

The many country clubs offer some of the finest golf in the area.  Each club has its own distinct features and membership/guest requirements, but each promises unforgettable experiences both on and off of the fairways. Some even boast master-planned communities that offer exquisite golfing and residential options as a lifestyle.

Fair Oaks Ranch and Country Club

Fair Oaks boasts two outstanding courses, their 18-hole Live Oak course, and the 18-hole Blackjack Oak course. Both were designed by Gary Player. This well-established club has been in operation since 1978. Various local four-legged wildlife have made this course their home, so watch rabbits, deer, and other animals as you play. On your drive into the club, you may also want to keep an eye out for homes for sale in Fair Oaks Ranch — just in case!

The Dominion Country Club

This exclusive country club is a part of the nationally-ranked gated community called The Dominion. When Bill Johnston, the Texas Open Champion and PGA tour professional, crafted this course, he left no detail untouched. He strategically situated the greens so golfers would never have to tee off into the sun, morning or evening. Visitors to the area can apply for a non-resident membership, which will give access privileges to the club for one year.

The Club at Sonterra

You may need to reserve two days of play to experience both the North and the South courses of The Club at Sonterra. The South Course, built in 1954, boasts of its appeal to the “traditional golfer.” The newer North Course incorporates beautiful natural elements and the area’s topography. Sonterra offers complete event planning services for businesses, community groups, and charitable functions.

The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch

Situated in the master-planned community of the same name, the Clubs of Cordillera Ranch wind through 8,100 acres along the Guadalupe River. The primary designer of this course is no other than PGA Master Jack Nicklaus. It boasts the longest course and longest tees in the area. If you fall in love with the landscape and purchase your own Cordillera Ranch real estate, you’ll be on the inner access circle and have no trouble getting the tee times you seek.

The full resort experience

If you are in the Boerne area for vacation, what could be more relaxing than enjoying your favorite pastime? These resorts offer a wide variety of experiences and services, from spas to fine dining, live shows, and sparkling pools, all right at your fingertips. After you book your tee time, don’t forget there is much more to explore.

La Cantera

This beautifully designed course was once the home of the PGA Tour’s Valero Cup. The par 72 course of Morrish/ Weiskoph design has been operating since 1995. Over the years, La Cantera has been recognized as a great resort course, won state and national golfers’ choice awards, and more. Indeed a golf course that has received a host of accolades, La Cantera is a golfing experience not to be missed!

The $2 million investment for the golf course alone has paid off, as the Boerne Star rated Tapatio Springs Hill Country Resort the best golf course in the Texas Hill Country. Tapatio Springs prides itself in being a “playable challenge for all skill levels” and offers four levels of tees at each hole to make it a great day of golf for everyone. It is open to the public every day except Tuesday and Wednesday.
